Afraid And Courageous

I've heard it said that we should not be fearful... but courageous. But do they not come hand in hand? Can you even be courageous without first overcoming fear? I would dare to say that nothing good in my life has ever come my way without me first having to overcome some sort of fear. These days, I no longer avoid fear. Quite the opposite actually. I walk directly into it.

  1. an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat.

  1. the ability to do something that frightens one.

I have never stormed into battle atop a valiant white steed with a majestic sword raised above my head while screaming "TO VICTORY OR DEATH!" But I did ask the girl of my dreams to marry me. I've never blitzed into a burning building with a handkerchief over my mouth to rescue a frightened little dachshund puppy dog. But I have sat on the side of the bed with my wife staring in complete wonderment at a positive pregnancy test. Courage can sometimes be found in real-life versions of what you see in epic Hollywood movie scenes but it can also be found in everyday-life situations.

Maybe you are in a profession where you risk your life every day for your community or country. Maybe you are a college student who's aspirations are bigger than your current GPA. Maybe you are a single mother who wonders if you are able to give your children the life they deserve. Maybe you have spent the last decade and a half steadily taking small steps toward a large dream that seems to be moving away from you faster than you can catch up to it.

No destination worth reaching can be found down a clear path.

No matter who you are or where you are in life, fear will find a way to whisper lies in your ear. It will keep you up at night filling your head with doubt and discouragement. It will try it's absolute best to convince you that you are a complete failure. It wants nothing more than to derail you from the track you know you are meant to be on. - DO. NOT. LISTEN. TO. FEAR. - Keep doing what you are doing. Stay the course. Ignore fear and take hold of courage.

Nothing worth doing is easy.
No destination worth reaching can be found down a clear path.
No dream worth catching can be grasped without a chase.

Fear has tried to stop me from doing many things in the past 33 years. It has succeeded in a few areas I am sure. But never again. Here's to facing fear (not avoiding it) and boldly walking into courage.

"No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us."
- Romans 8:37

Fear is not a locked door.
Fear is a corridor that leads to courage.
Courage is the key to achieving your purpose.
